MPC Planner Spreads Message about Sustainability

Planner Liz Alberston presented a project entitled The Cardboard City as part of the Pod Art attraction at this year’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn. This project educated people about sustainable city design by providing a space for participants to design their own city by dragging/carrying large scale buildings across a simulated landscape while protecting scarce natural resources, such as rivers, wetlands, farmland and mountains. Participants also had to consider the form and function of the city including building orientation and sustainable choices for powering the city. The entire project was constructed of reused cardboard, much of which was from the festival site, that was recycled afterwards.

The Cardboard City (below) was a lesson in sustainable development and how that influences city design.
