DEFINING DOWNTOWN KNOXVILLE

Knoxville’s downtown (also known as the central business district, or CBD) is a 0.7-square mile area in the center of the city, bounded by I-40, the James White Parkway, the Tennessee River, and World’s Fair Park.

This definition coincides with the area designated as Tract 1 by the U.S. Census Bureau, the source of much of the demographic information presented in this report. Two Bureau products, the 2000 Census of Population and Housing and the 2000 Census Transportation Planning Package (published in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation), were important resources. Additional statistics were collected from the 1980 and 1990 censuses to measure downtown’s evolution over the past 20 years or so.
